In The Bible's Story: An Adventure through the Ages, you and your children or students are invited to explore the history of one world-changing Book. This is an 11 lesson unit study exploring the long and bumpy road that led to the English Bibles available to us today.
Why study the history of the Bible?
The history of the Bible is, ultimately, very close to the history of Christianity itself, although it is a subset of that history. We wrote this unit study because of our belief that Christians should know their own history. Only by understanding the historical context and the journey to the Bibles that sit on our bookshelves today can we really understand the weight of this book. By understanding its history, we realize how valuable its presence is in our own lives. By understanding this story, we learn to care about the need for Bibles around the world. This study specifically follows the story of the English Bible. We hope to, in the future, create a second study that tells the adventurous tales behind the Bibles that exist in other world languages today!
Understanding the history of the Bible also prevents misconceptions and misunderstandings. Many college students and young adults who were raised in the church experience immense frustration when they come across ideas about the Bible that they have never heard of. Somehow, we are raising our children to know Bible stories without knowing where the book itself came from. By understanding the journey to the Bible of today, we can appreciate the truth it contains all the more.
What age level is this for?
This unit study is targeted toward a 3rd-8th grade age range, although it can be used family-style. Students should be independent and confident readers and should be able to write in sentences in order to complete the student workbook pages on their own. The information in this study will be challenging and interesting for many high schoolers, however, we do not include research or long-form written assignments, and because of that, we do not designate this as a study that requires enough work for a for-credit class in high school.
